The Interview:

Tell us about yourself & your home

HML_01.19.21-109.jpg

My name is LeeAnn Roberts, and our home in North Palm Beach is four bedrooms, four and a half baths, plus an office and there is 4,000 square feet roughly. We moved in in July of 2020.

I am a mom to five kids & I run two businesses. Both businesses benefit female entrepreneurs that are local to our area. Business Casual Mastermind is a membership group for women to get together and network and learn with each other and we teach marketing every week to them. And the other one is a marketing business called Mama Crush Marketing where I do marketing strategy and the tech for women in business in our area. I also homeschool my kids!

What made you fall in love with this home?

HML_01.19.21-39.jpg

“Well, this was kind of an accidental purchase for us. We just started looking at homes on the water. We knew that that's where we wanted to live, but we were thinking it would be a couple of years from now.

But when we walked into this home, we were blown away! The ambiance, the high ceilings, and then this gorgeous backyard and being on the water, and we just knew. This was it! But we both looked at each other, my husband and I, and we're like "maybe in a few years” — I don't think this is going to happen right now. But it was kind of a dream home and then boom, boom, boom, a whole bunch of things happened and everything fell perfectly into place.

And this house actually became a reality and we were able to buy it. And so, we moved in, and ever since, I have been SO excited to be here. I wake up every day and just pinch myself that I get to live in this gorgeous grand house. And everyone has a beautiful bedroom we were able to buy a boat and put it right there in the backyard and we can hop on it anytime we want, and it's just been amazing for our family. “

How does this home complement your family’s lifestyle?

My husband Dave works from home, I work from home, and I homeschool my kids here as well. Actually one of my favorite things about this house was something I didn’t even know when we bought it.

I didn't realize until after is that there was a little loft upstairs and I thought, "Oh, this will be a great place space for the kids to keep all the toys from downstairs." But, we actually made the decision to homeschool starting this year, and it has turned into our little schoolhouse. And without that space, I don't even know that I would have really fully committed to doing homeschooling. So, it's been a unique opportunity that that little space has provided.

Are there any other hidden gems in the home that you've discovered along the way?

Well, there are a lot of hidden gems. The people that built this home before us did some very unique things — the beautiful ceilings. And even the downstairs half bath — it kind of reminds me of Italy and an Italian winery. There are so many little nooks and crannies and alcoves that give this house a lot of character and it's only a 12-year-old home. And you wouldn't think that it would have so much character, but it does! It’s almost timeless in a way.

What’s something you have in this home that you’ve never had before?

So this house came with a water filtration system and I didn't even know I needed it. And then I was like, "Oh my gosh, this is water? It tastes so delicious!" I never had it before and now it’s one of our favorite things!

There's an episode of Golden Girls where Sophia comes in with a glass of water and she's like, taste this and then Dorothy says, "it's good." She's like, "Is it really good?" She says, "Yes." "We're rich, you know, we can bottle this" and it was from their tap, but I was like, Oh my gosh, like we're rich, like, this is amazing. It's so delicious.

How has your family adjusted to the new neighborhood?

HML_01.19.21-86.jpg

We came from a neighborhood that had so many young families. It's built for young families and there was even a splash park in the community. And so, our kids had so many friends and so did we, we made so many great friends there. And when we moved here, there was a little hesitation because we thought, "What if we go and nobody talks to each other or there are no little kids on our street?" But we have been pleasantly surprised, and it is not a neighborhood that's filled with little kids. It's not like it is in our old neighborhood in Jupiter, but we have found so many families along the way. And this neighborhood is definitely getting younger.

I born and raised in Florida and I love this neighborhood because to me it feels like old Florida. But with that, there comes a lot of older families. You know, these are a little bit older homes, not our house in particular, but there are a lot of older homes. But now there's this new wave coming through — people are coming in and fixing up these homes and younger families are moving in. So we've been so fortunate to meet you know, some kids on the street and meet some really cool couples. But I will say that we love it — it's quiet, it's pleasant, and we've been really, really happy here so far.

When we started looking for a home, we loved Jupiter and I mean, we absolutely loved it. We thought that's where we were going to stay forever. But then we also love Tequesta because of the same idea. It's kind of this little pocket of Old Florida. And we started to explore North Palm, not really knowing what to expect. And we got here and said, well, this is exactly the same, you know, it's this little pocket of Old Florida on the water, younger families moving in. And to us, it just felt like home as soon as we pulled up.

Would you say that North Palm Beach feels like a neighborhood to you rather than a town?

It does. It feels like a neighborhood to me. When you live in an HOA, you know, everyone's house is going to look nice, right. You know no one's going to have their car up on bricks and in the front yard. And here, it's not a guarantee, but we are so fortunate to have this beautiful home. And it's gorgeous! When you pull up, it's stunning. I pull up every day and say, wow, I can't believe I live here. And I will say that people here take such pride in their homes. The other really cool thing about this neighborhood, it's very funny to me. When we moved in, everyone is super protective and very prideful about the garbage collection.

Garbage collection? Tell us more!

Garbage collection is hands down the best I've ever seen. And it's also really funny because Dave and I both heard from different neighbors when we first moved in.

It is a valet garbage service. It's like a little golf cart with a garbage thing on the back, like a dump area or whatever on the back. But, they come up and you don't even have to drag your garbage cans out to the street. They walk up to your home, to your house, and they dumped the garbage in, and they come three times a week. It’s just part of living in North Palm Beach! Dave and I thought this was so funny. We started hearing about this from neighbors and we're like, what is it with the garbage?

What do you love most about the location?

HML_01.19.21-83.jpg

So when we lived in Jupiter, I thought that I had everything I possibly needed there. You know, and you'll hear the one complaint in Jupiter is there's no Chick-fil-A or Target right next to you, but everything else is there. But we moved to this area and now I'm like, "Oh my gosh, I'm really in the middle of everything." With COVID, we don't go to the mall as much anymore, or even out to eat quite as often as we did, but there is everything you possibly need within a few minutes of this house. And by boat, too. We're so close to Peanut Island, we can run up to PGA and go to Waterway or any of the restaurants up that way. We've even gone up to Jupiter and gotten to restaurants up there. And so, yeah, it's fantastic. We love this location and again, it's something that we didn't even know we needed until we moved here, and now I think I can't leave here.

Explain a little bit about how your personal background has influenced your design choices here.

That's funny that you asked that because I feel like my home is so the opposite of what is trendy right now. You know, there's no modern farmhouse here. There's no coastal chic going on and I love those looks, but it's not ever been my style. I definitely like a more tropical island feel. I'm born and raised in South Florida, and I think if you look around this house, it would either look like I was raised there or on an island somewhere. So, I love the color green and oranges and yellow; just really anything tropical. I was so lucky to move into this house, and I'm a big fan of color. There are no white walls anywhere here. And I walked into this house, the previous owners had painted every wall, beautiful shades that just went so well with the decor that I already had, so it worked out really nicely.

I'm definitely influenced by the West Indies style. And actually… this home is a West Indies design. So when we walked in, I was like, this is my house. Like, this is exactly what my furniture fits in. You know, it was perfect for that. I also really believe in bringing the outside in, I am a big fan. I can't keep a plant alive to save my life. So there are a million plants in here, but they're all fake. But I really like bringing, you know, greens and natural organic textures and a lot of the outside in, and we live on this gorgeous waterway here, and it's very tropical and I wanted that to be reflected in the house.

Talk to us about your favorite space in the home.

HML_01.19.21-42.jpg

So I have a couple, I can't just nail it down to one, but the outside, the backyard is absolutely amazing. It was perfect for our family yet it's high-end enough and gorgeous enough to feel like a resort. But our kids can, you know, we can hop on the boat and head out for the day and we can come back and we can get in the pool. In this cooler weather, we've been able to get in our hot tub, which we never had had before. And there's even an outdoor kitchen built-in. So we spend a lot of time outside. There's a little hidden gem upstairs off the master bedroom — a huge balcony with a fireplace. I don't even have furniture on it yet. You know, I still haven't figured out exactly what to do with that space, but standing up there and feeling the breeze and the view has been amazing. The last part is, I think I mentioned earlier is just this little loft that I have and how we kind of turned it into a homeschool area. That's another favorite part of my house.

Lastly — What do you think is the theme song for this house?

I cannot see Dave come down the stairs without hearing Jay-Z rap 'Mama I made it'. He and I have this long-running joke about this and he's coming down this grand staircase, then I just hear 'mama I made it'. But the actual house itself has definitely got this tropical boat vibe going. So you really throw in, you know, a soundtrack, a playlist with Kenny Chesney, a little Jimmy Buffet you know, we listen to a lot of country outside in our back patio. So that would be the playlist, but the main song has got to be 'Mama I made it'.
