Back to College: Decorate Your Dorm Like a Pro

Whether you’re a first-time college student or a parent of a college kid, picking out dorm decor and necessities can be a stressful process. We’re here to help with a guide on how to make the most out of your dorm room! With decorating tips, storage hacks, and more, we’ve got you covered!!

1. start with a color combo

Having a color scheme is the easiest way to create a room that looks put together and cohesive. Stick to one or two main colors to base your bedding and most of your decor around.

A great way to form a color palette is to pick one neutral color- like white, gray or cream - and then add a pop of color that you love!

2. Buy The Basics!

Start your shopping with the essential pieces!

The bed is a good place to start! Stick a bedspread in a solid color or with a simple pattern or texture. This will make it easy to choose cute throw pillows and blankets! A headboard is a great way to add both visual appeal and comfort to your room- especially if you plan on doing a lot of late night studying!

Another essential piece is a large area rug to make your dorm feel homey and comfortable. Dorm rugs typically end up getting dirty much quicker than one at home would so we recommend avoiding white and opting towards something with some color. This is where a color scheme is helpful! Choose a rug that ties in the main color of your room.

3. Add in Accents

Once you are all set with the bigger pieces, it’s time to add in some fun accents. As much as you may want to fully outfit your dorm, don’t go crazy. Your tiny dorm room will get crowded quickly and all that extra decor will end up under your bed or in the back of your closet.

Instead, pick a few smaller items such as one or two framed photos, an artificial plan or a couple of decorative objects.

Then, focus on the walls! Wallpaper is a great way to transform a dorm room. Just make sure it is easily removable. Posters are also an easy and affordable way to decorate, and lets you avoid having to transport and hang big frames. Another fun touch to add is a neon sign!

Pick out a two or three small throw pillows and a fun throw blanket and you will be all set!

4. Storage galore!

Picking out cute decor is super fun. But don’t forget the most important thing - storage! It’s essential to thoughtfully plan how you will fit everything you need into your tiny dorm room.

Small plastic dressers are an affordable way to add a TON of storage that can easily go under the bed. Then, add on a bedskirt to conceal any under-the-bed storage.

A tiered cart can double as a nightstand - adding functionality and several drawers of storage without taking up much space.

Look for multi-use pieces, such as a storage ottoman to add both seating and storage into your room, or a catch-all lamp that offers an extra bit of desk storage.

A bedside caddy can attach to your bed frame and gives you a handy space to store chargers, books, headphones, etc.

Another helpful piece is an over the door shoe rack. Closet space is usually limited in a dorm so this will help with extra storage and keep you organized!

5. More Essentials

The most important thing about your dorm is that it is a functional space that you enjoy being in! Keep reading for some more essential items to make your time in the dorm easy.

An electric fan can be important in your room for two reasons: dorms don’t usually have the best AC and a fan can help keep a refreshing airflow. Fans also usually give some white noise, which helps as dorm hallways can get loud and having some type of white noise is a game changer!

Extension Cords! Outlets are usually pretty limited in a dorm or are in awkward spots. Having extension cords solves this problem. Make sure to get surge protected cords - Dorm Housing usually has rules about this.

A mattress topper will add much needed comfort to the mattresses dorms offer. Pick up a mattress protector as well!

A washable slip cover for your desk chair is another way to add some more comfort to your room, plus it will help tie all your decor together.

Time to get to shopping! We hope this guide will ease the transition to dorm life!
